Enlightenment, Inc., has lasted in the software business for more than five years, in large part due to the efforts and talents of Ed Chang. As Chief Financial Officer, Vice President of Operations, Director of Sales, and a member of the board of directors, Ed has contributed to the distribution of 20 software titles that sold more than 12,000 [20,000 by 1989] copies in 22 countries on six continents. He was crucial to the company during its embryonic stages, becoming the second largest shareholder, and managing to bring seven other stockholders and over $30,000 of seed capital into the company.
Partly through Ed's efforts, the company was backed by more than $450,000 in venture capital in a second round of financing. As a result of this, the company was able to achieve international distribution through Bertelsmann in West Germany, Software Centre in Great Britain, and Phase 4 in Canada. Domestically, Enlightenment's products were distributed through the B. Dalton chain, Egghead Discount Software, Software City, and more than 1,000 independent software retailers. Ed's efforts with dealers and distributors were a key part of the overall sales effort.
As Vice President of Operations, Ed managed chess authors, copy-protection specialists, and programmers, as well as assisting in the company's legal research. He helped with programming the data conversions of the products from the Commodore environment to the Apple and IBM environments. As CFO, he managed accounts receivable and payable, wrote payroll checks, and facilitated tax compliance.
My role as founder of the company has become passive this year, but Ed's has remained active as one of the company's three directors. I would recommend him as a valuable addition to any company.
Signed,
Martin Marshall
